How Does an Electric Fence Work?

An electric fence system consists of several strands of tensioned wire mounted on brackets above your perimeter wall or standalone posts. The wires are connected to an energizer (also called an energiser or charger) which delivers a high-voltage, low-current pulse every second. This pulse is painful but not lethal — it deters intruders without causing permanent harm.

Modern electric fences in Kenya are connected to an alarm system. When the fence is cut or shorted, the alarm triggers immediately — alerting you or your security team.

Electric Fence Cost Per Metre in Kenya (2026)

The most common way to quote electric fence prices in Kenya is per linear metre of perimeter wall or fence line.

Installation Type Price per Metre (KES)
Basic 6-strand fence on existing wall 1,200 – 1,800
8-strand fence on existing wall 1,500 – 2,200
10-strand fence on existing wall 1,800 – 2,800
Standalone electric fence (no existing wall) 2,500 – 4,500
Farm / large-perimeter fence 800 – 1,500
Note: Prices above include materials (brackets, wire, insulators, warning signs) and installation labour. They do not include the energizer, which is quoted separately.

Electric Fence Energizer Prices in Kenya

The energizer is the heart of the system. It determines how powerful the fence is and how many metres it can cover.

Energizer Type Coverage Price Range (KES)
Basic 5-joule energizer Up to 500m 8,000 – 14,000
10-joule energizer Up to 1,000m 14,000 – 22,000
20-joule energizer Up to 2,000m 22,000 – 35,000
Solar energizer (5J) Up to 500m 18,000 – 30,000
Solar energizer (10J) Up to 1,000m 28,000 – 45,000

Popular energizer brands in Kenya: Nemtek, Gallagher, and Dare Products. All three are widely stocked, and spare parts are readily available.

Solar energizers are ideal for properties with unreliable power supply, farms, and remote warehouses. They charge during the day via a solar panel and continue running at night from a battery.

What Factors Affect Electric Fence Cost in Kenya?

1. Length of Perimeter

The longer your perimeter, the more wire, brackets, and insulators are needed. This is the biggest single factor in your total cost.

2. Number of Strands

More strands mean better security — but also more material and more labour. A 6-strand fence is the minimum for a functional deterrent. For higher-risk properties, 8 or 10 strands are recommended.

3. Wall vs Standalone Posts

Installing on an existing perimeter wall is simpler and cheaper because the wall acts as the support structure. A standalone fence requires posts to be concreted into the ground, which adds significantly to the cost.

4. Energizer Size

A larger energizer covers more metres and delivers a stronger pulse. Correctly sizing the energizer to your perimeter is important — an undersized energizer will leave parts of your fence weak, while an oversized one is an unnecessary expense.

5. Alarm Integration

Most modern electric fences in Kenya are connected to an alarm system that sounds when the fence is tampered with. Adding an alarm module with a GSM dialler (which sends you an SMS or calls you when triggered) typically adds KES 5,000 – 15,000 to the installation cost but is strongly recommended.

6. Location

Installations within Nairobi are the most straightforward to price. For upcountry installations, transport and accommodation costs for the installation team will be added to your quote.

Is an Electric Fence Legal in Kenya?

Yes. Electric fences are legal in Kenya and are widely used in residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial settings. However, they must comply with safety standards:

  • Warning signs must be displayed at regular intervals (every 10 metres)
  • The energizer must be certified and deliver a pulse (not a continuous current)
  • The fence must be designed so that it cannot be accidentally touched by passers-by

Our installations fully comply with Kenyan safety requirements. Every installation includes the required warning signs.

Can an Electric Fence Be Combined With Other Security Systems?

Absolutely — and we recommend it. An electric fence is most effective when combined with:

A layered security approach combining an electric fence, CCTV, and access control is the standard for high-security properties in Nairobi.
